Importance of serum PSA for early detection of prostate cancer
Abstract
Objective: Prostate surface antigen (PSA) and Digital Rectum Examination (DRE) has been widely used worldwide in diagnosis of prostate cancer. However many physicians still doubt their importance as primary screening test for early detection of disease. The objective of our study was to assess and emphasize the importance of PSA as screening test in early detection of prostate cancer.
Study Design: Descriptive study based on convenient non-probability technique.
Material and methods: The study was conducted at Urology Department, POF Hospital, Wah Cantt. Total 850 patients were included in this screening study with no previous history of prostate cancer. All patients included were between 50-90 years of age. Patient with diagnosed prostate cancer were excluded. Data collected was analyzed by SPSS.
Results: Out of 850 patients 300 were volunteers with no symptoms while 550 patients had moderate to severe urinary tract symptoms. 100 patients had raised PSA level out of which 30 patients had positive finding of prostate cancer.
Conclusion: Serum PSA can be used as a useful screening test for detecting prostate cancer.
