- Introduction
The Pakistan Journal of Pathology upholds rigorous principles of integrity, transparency, and ethical research practices. In alignment with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines, this Conflict of Interest Policy aims to facilitate the recognition, declaration, and resolution of any potential conflicts of interest among contributors and stakeholders in the publication process.
- Definition of Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest occurs when personal, financial, or other competing interests could unduly influence a researcher’s judgment or conduct, potentially undermining the objectivity, integrity, or fairness of their involvement in research and publication.
- Scope
This policy applies to all individuals involved in the publication process, including authors, reviewers, editors, and members of the editorial board.
- Disclosure Requirements
4.1 Authors: It is mandatory for authors to declare any financial or non-financial relationships that may present a conflict of interest with the submitted research. This information should be provided in the manuscript, either in the acknowledgment segment or a distinct disclosure section.
4.2 Reviewers: It is the responsibility of reviewers to report any competing interests that could influence their objectivity. They should withdraw from reviewing submissions where such conflicts are present.
4.3 Editors and Editorial Board Members: Editors and members of the editorial board are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could affect their impartiality in editorial decision-making. Such conflicts must be transparently reported and handled appropriately.
- Handling Conflicts of Interest
5.1 During Review Process: Should a conflict of interest be detected during the review process, the editorial team may appoint a different reviewer. Additionally, authors might be required to respond to and clarify any disclosed conflicts.
5.2 Editorial Decision-Making: Editors and editorial board members who have conflicts of interest will abstain from participating in decisions regarding the relevant manuscript. Alternative editorial oversight will be implemented to maintain unbiased evaluation.
5.3 Publication Decisions: The evaluation of a manuscript for acceptance, rejection, or revision will depend on the quality of the research, as well as its scientific rigor and ethical compliance.
- Transparency
Conflicts of interest reported by authors, reviewers, editors, or editorial board members will be disclosed openly. If none exist, a statement confirming this will be provided.
- Training and Education
All participants in the publication process will receive instruction on the significance of recognizing and addressing conflicts of interest. Awareness and comprehension will be strengthened through structured training sessions.
- Periodic Review and Updates
This policy will undergo regular evaluations to maintain its applicability and efficacy. Revisions will be implemented as needed to align with evolving industry standards, regulatory requirements, or ethical guidelines. The Conflict of Interest Policy reflects the Pakistan Journal of Pathology's dedication to preserving the credibility of the publication process and strengthening confidence among stakeholders, including readers, authors, reviewers, and editors.
