PLASMA ANTITHROMBIN LEVEL AND PLATELET COUNT IN PREECLAMPSIA
Abstract
Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the plasma Antithrombin level and platelet count in normal pregnant females and preeclamptics.
Material and Methods: A comparative study was conducted from 23.9.2012 to 30.6.2013 at Postgraduate Medical Institute Lahore. A total of 52 normal pregnant females and 52 preeclamptic patients were tested for AT level and platelet count and the subsequent data was recorded and analyzed by SPSS.Â
Results: In the present study, 52 normal pregnant females were included as controls. There were 52 preeclamptic patients out of which 21(40%) had mild disease and 31(60%) had severe disease. Mean ± SD of AT in control group was 119.08±18.45 % and in the study group it was 74.10±17.65% with significant p-value of 0.0001. Mean and SD of the platelet count in the control group was 302±70.4 x109/l and in the study group it was 223±76.5 x109/l with a p-value of 0.0001, which was significant. A correlation of 0.59 was found between the AT level and platelet count.
Conclusion: In the present study low levels of AT and platelet count were observed in preeclamptic females and it was concluded that patients with severe PE can be screened out by measuring these two parameters along with a proper history. A significant correlation was found between AT level, platelet count and severity of PE.
