Abstract

Objective: To find out the serum adiponectin levels in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients as compared with healthy volunteers.

Study design: Cross sectional study.

Patients and Methods: Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, in collaboration with Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi, from July 2012 to December 2012.

Material & Methods: A total number of 200 subjects including 100 CAD patients and 100 controls of either gender, aged more than 18 years undergoing coronary angiography were included by non-probability consecutive sampling. Patients with history of diabetes, autoimmune diseases, acute/chronic infection, hematological, renal, liver, thyroid and neoplastic disease were excluded. Serum adiponectin was analysed by using Milliplex kit on Luminex 200. Independent sample “t†test was used to compare mean serum adiponectin levels between individuals with CAD and without CAD.

Result: Mean serum adiponectin level was significantly low in cases 3.08 ± 1.72 ug/ml [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] than in controls 6.47 ± 2.21 ug/ml (mean ± SD).

Conclusion: Mean serum adiponectin is low in patients with CAD as compared to controls. Serum Adiponectin is potentially clinically relevant biomarker of the coronary artery disease.

Key Words: Serum adiponectin, Coronary artery disease.
