Abstract

Objective: To determine the age distribution, site of involvement and histopathological pattern of CNS tumors in our population.

Study Design: Descriptive Study

Place and Duration of Study: Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi, from January 2008 to December 2012.

Material and Methods: All histologically diagnosed tumors of CNS registered with tumor registry were included. Basic epidemiological data regarding each case was collected from the patients directly or from the attending doctors. Data was analysed for age distribution, site of involvement and histological types of tumors.

Results: A total of 549 cases were registered with tumor registry during the study period. Males were more frequently affected than females with M: F ratio of 2.4:1. Maximum number of cases were observed in sixth decade (16.8 %) followed by fourth decade (15.2 %) and paediatric age group (16.2%). Frontal lobe of cerebrum was involved in majority (48.2%) of cases. Histologically glial tumors i.e. astrocytomas and Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) comprised the major bulk of tumors.

Conclusions: Analysis of CNS tumors revealed bimodal age peak and frontal lobe predominant involvement. Glial tumors appear to be more common in our study followed by medulloblastoma. Revolution in diagnostic modalities including immunohistochemical techniques can help in early diagnosis of disease.
