Seroprevalence of Hepatitis B and C in healthy adult male recruits
Abstract
Introduction: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) are the commonest causes of chronic liver disease the world over including Pakistan. Wide global variation exists in the results of previous studies regarding prevalence of HBV and HCV infections. We analysed sera of 2558 army recruits for the presence of HBsAg and Anti HCV antibodies. Study design: Prospective, descriptive. Time and place of study: June 2005 to December 2006, Combined Military Hospital, Risalpur and Armed Forces Institute of pathology (AFIP) Rawalpindi. Materials and methods: Young healthy recruits inducted from all over Pakistan, were screened for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and Hepatitis C virus antibodies (Anti HCV) by rapid method and positive cases were confirmed from Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi. Results: A total of 2558 individuals were examined. Out of those 72(2.8%) had HBsAg whereas 87(3.4%) were positive for anti HCV antibodies. Conclusion: Observed decrease in the HBV prevalence is a healthy sign but awareness and adherence to strict aseptic techniques is the need of the hour Gender based studies at larger levels are required to monitor closely and continuously the disease status in society.Downloads
