Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the frequency of Type 2 DM in HCV infected patients.

Study design: Descriptive.

Place and durtion: Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, October 2013 to April 2014.

Subjects and Methods: Patients with HCV Infection, of the age 30 years and above, and non-cirrhotic were included in this study. Patients with acute infections, on dialysis and receiving transplants were excluded. The samples were collected in Sodium Fluoride tubes for Fasting Plasma glucose measurement by Spectrophotometric analysis and in EDTA tubes for the detection of HCV RNA by PCR. Patients were provided with a structured questionnaire and consent was taken before including them in the study. All the data was analyzed using SPSS.

Results: Frequency of type 2 DM among HCV patients was 13.7% (46/334 patients). HCV patients of old age were more prone to develop diabetes and majority of them had impaired fasting glucose concentrations. The number of male patients (171) was greater than females (163). History of alcohol intake had a relation to some extent towards the development of type 2 DM. The marital status, education, smoking and family history of diabetes had no effect on the relationship of HCV with type 2 DM.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that there is a strong positive association between HCV and type 2 DM. However, the mechanism of this association needs further investigation.

Keywords: Type 2 DM, HCV, PCR.
