Pregnancy outcomes in Hepatitis B or/and C positive Mothers

Abstract

Objective: To determine pregnancy outcomes (fetomaternal) in hepatitis B or/and C +ve Mothers, delivered at MCH Center.

Place & duration of Study: MCH PIMS, tertiary care Hospital, Islamabad. 1st Jan – 31st Dec 2003.

Design: Descriptive Study.

Methods: Study was based upon data searched manually from hospital records of 235 out of 5813 mothers, hepatitis B or/and C +ve that delivered during 2003.

Hepatitis B or/and C +ve mothers (booked cases) with Gestational amenorrhea > 28 weeks were included in study while women with obstetrical & other medical complications were excluded. Primary outcome measures included antenatal complications, mode of delivery and perinatal outcomes while secondary outcome measures included probable causative risk factors, clinical and biochemical aspects of hepatitis B & C.

Results: Overall prevalence was 4% while hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis B & C was, 1.1%, 2.8% and 0.08% respectively. 3 cases had IUGR, 2 had IUD, 3 presented with Oligohydrominios while 6 with preterm Labor and 1 with congenital anomalies. 35 patients underwent C-section for indications other than hepatitis B & C. The mean birth weight was 2.9 ± 0.23 kg. 4 babies had 5 minutes Apgar score of < 7, 3 Babies were shifted to NICU. 59 patients had H/O blood transfusion, and 37 had H/O previous surgery. 9 cases had already deranged LFTs and 3 were with Cirrhosis of liver. One patient presented in Hepatic encephalopathy and 5 with jaundice.

Conclusion: Study showed that Hepatitis B & C infections have no adverse effects on pregnancy and vice versa.
